Research Focus

Regenerative Medicine & Biomechanics

Area of Research

The research group MAM – Medical Additive Manufacturing is a subdivision of the High-Tech Research Center (HFZ) at the Department of Biomedical Engineering (DBE) of the University of Basel. We work closely together at and with the University Hospital Basel (Medical 3D Print Lab @ USB), other clinics, academic institutions and research groups in Switzerland and abroad. Our research focuses on innovative solutions in the field of computer-aided surgery and medical 3D printing, including bio-printing and regenerative medicine.

Approved Research Projects

  • BCFx Registry – International, multicenter, prospective registry to collect data of treatment patterns in patients with bilateral condylar fracture (BCFx) of the mandible
  • Alloplastic total temporomandibular joint replacement registry
  • MFx60+, International, multicenter, prospective registry to collect data in patients > 60 years suffering from mandibular fractures
  • OFx registry International, multicenter, prospective registry to collect data on orbital fractures (OFx), their primary and secondary treatment and outcome
  • Research And Development On 3D Bio-printing with Smart Bioink For Bone Regeneration (Bilateral research collaboration with Asia, ETH)
  • Key Technology Research And Development On 3D Bioprinted Exosome-Laden Composite Scaffold For Improving Bone Regeneration (Osteology Foundation)
  • Research Collaboration "Organ on a chip“ and „Bioprinting", Global Research Center for Organ Mimetics (GROM), South Korea, UNIST
  • Tongue fitness (TOFI) trainer – Digital & interactive anti-snore therapy, Innosuisse
  • Medical 3D printing on-the-spot – Integration of 3D planning and 3D printing processes in clinical applications
  • PEEK 3D printing, additive manufacturing technologies for patient-specific implants made of polyetheretherketone
  • 3D printing of bioresorbable implants for bone regeneration
  • Evaluation of surface scanning methods with different 3D scanners
  • Cranial vault reconstruction with patient-specific implants
  • Randomized multi-centered study on enhancement of autologous fat graft survival by recipient site preparation
