OPBC was founded in 2017 as an independent non-profit organization by Prof. Walter P. Weber and is now supported by over 700 leading international experts and an increasing number of patient representatives from 86 countries.
The first study of the consortium deals with breast reconstruction after cancer surgery. Breast reconstruction is usually performed with the help of implants. However, it is currently not known whether the positioning of the implant in front of (prepektoral) or behind (subpektoral) the breast muscle is better for the patients.
Patient representatives of the OPBC have been instrumental in the development of the study design and in the selection of the study endpoints. Thanks to their contribution this study, which is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), is primarily aimed at measuring the quality of life of patients undergoing surgery. The study also evaluates safety, satisfaction, aesthetics and stress for patients in both comparison groups.
Prof. Walter P. Weber talks about his experiences in working with patient representatives of the OPBC:
