The Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF) has awarded Prof. Ludwig Kappos with the prestigious Charcot Award 2025 - the highest international honor for a lifetime of outstanding achievement in multiple sclerosis (MS) research.

With this award, the MSIF recognizes Prof. Kappos' decades of work, which has had a decisive impact on the diagnosis, treatment and care of people with MS worldwide. The award is presented every two years and is associated with the Charcot Lecture at the world's largest MS congress, ECTRIMS, which attracts over 10,000 experts. For Prof. Kappos, the award is not only a personal recognition, but also a sign of the international visibility of MS research in Basel.

35 years of MS research in Basel

Since moving to Basel in 1990, Prof. Kappos has played a key role in advancing clinical MS research. Under his leadership, Basel has been involved in the development of almost all MS therapies established today. At the same time, new methods for assessing the course of the disease were developed: Biomarkers such as neurofilament light, innovative MRI techniques and digital assessments have decisively advanced clinical research.

Basel as an international center

Under his leadership, Basel developed into a globally recognized center for MS research. An important step was the founding of the Research Center for Clinical Neuroimmunology and Neuroscience Basel (RC2NB) in 2019. RC2NB combines clinical and research expertise and pursues a clear mission: innovative approaches for the diagnosis, treatment and personalized care of people with MS.

Looking back and looking to the future

In the video interview, Prof. Kappos talks about the milestones of the past decades, the development of MS research in Basel and ventures a look into the future.
