Prof. Walter P. Weber receives the Annemarie Karrasch Research Prize 2020

Walter Weber

Prof. Dr. Walter P. Weber has been awarded by the propatient research foundation for his study on the reconstruction of the female breast after cancer surgery. The award ceremony will take place during the Clinical Research Day on January 23, 2020 at the University Hospital Basel.

Prof. Weber founded the "Oncoplastic Breast Consortium" in 2017 as an independent non-profit organisation with the aim of establishing oncoplastic surgery in clinical practice worldwide. The Consortium has already been able to win over 500 leading experts and an increasing number of patient representatives from 75 countries for its mission. The consortium's first study deals with breast reconstruction after cancer surgery, which is most commonly performed with the help of implants.

At present, it is not known which position of the breast implant is optimal: in front or behind the pectoral muscle. The OPBC-02/PREPEC study is being conducted at 11 breast centers in Switzerland and 10 other centers in Europe and the USA. Over a period of almost two years, 372 women will be enrolled in the study. During a further two years, the study will examine which position of the implant leads to a better quality of life. In addition, the two groups will be compared in terms of safety, satisfaction, aesthetics and stress for the patients. Patient representatives have been actively involved in the development of the protocol and the selection of the study endpoints from the beginning. Previously, the study has received an Investigator-initiated trails (IICT) grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
