Research Focus

Neurology

Area of Research

Clinical neurosurgery, with a focus on pediatric neurosurgery, neuroendoscopy, patient oriented outcome (PROMS), and blood thinners in neurosurgery.

Approved Research Projects

  • SECA-Trial (Surgical Evacuation of Chronic subdural hematoma and Aspirin) is a randomized multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. The aim of this study is to compare the relapse rate, the peri- and postoperative bleeding risk, as well as the rate of perioperative cardiovascular complications, of patients receiving trephination for the treatment of chronic subdural hematoma, with and without discontinuation of aspirin cardio.
  • NaVPS (stereotactic versus ultrasound navigated ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement) is a randomized controlled trial. The aim of this study is to compare the accuracy of ultrasound guided and stereotactic guided insertion of the ventriculoperitoneal shunt catheter in to the ventricles.
  • Swiss-PBTB(Swiss Pediatric Brain Tumor Database) is a prospective Database including all patients undergoing surgical treatment of a pediatric brain tumor.
  • Trophy Register- (Treatment of post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus in neonates)is a prospective multicenter database including preterm babies suffering from intraventricular bleeding and analyzing the effect of endoscopic washout on the rate of ventriculoperitoneal shunts. This study is done in cooperation with the pediatric Neurosurgery Charite clinic in Berlin, Germany
  • EMINENT-ICH (Early minimally invasive image guided endoscopic evacuation of intracerebral hemorrhage) is a national multi-center, two-arm, open labelled randomized controlled trial comparing minimal invasive endoscopic evacuation and best medical treatment (blood pressure monitoring and intensive care) of spontaneous intracranial bleeding (hemorrhagic stroke). Treatment options for spontaneous intracranial bleedings are very limited and result in over half of the patients in very poor neurological outcome or death. The aim of this study is to assess in a randomized fashion whether an early (within 24 hours), complete, minimal invasive endoscopic hematoma evacuation will improve functional outcome and lower mortality rates as opposed to the current practice of best medical treatment.
  • ProCoN-Study (Prospective neuroCognitive assessment in Neuroendoscopy) is a prospective cohort study investigating the influence of neuroendoscopic surgery for various indications (e.g. hydrocephalus, intraventricular and intracerebral cysts, intraventricular tumors) on neurocognitive functions and outcome in approximately 100 adult patients over a 5-year period. Intracranial neuroendoscopy has significantly reduced complications linked to traditional craniotomies, yet often necessitates navigation around neural structures vital for neurocognitive functions. Unfortunately, the impact on neurocognition is frequently overlooked and possibly underestimated, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive analysis. We aim to identify postoperative neurocognitive deficits and recovery rates through a battery of 19 neurocognitive tests. Neuropsychologists from the Memory Clinic at the Felix Platter Spital will conduct comprehensive assessments both before surgery and at multiple postoperative intervals, enabling a meticulous exploration of neuroendoscopic surgery's cognitive impact. In addition, postoperative radiological results will be assessed, while patient reported outcome measurements (PROMs), looking at the patients subjective opinion on their outcome and neurocognitive function, is evaluated as well.

Ongoing Research Projects

  • Several prospective randomized trials are in the initiation phase addressing topics such as neuroendoscopy in normal preassure hydrocephalus, treatment of hydrocephalus in children after brain tumor surgery, the management of blood thinners after craniotomy. In addition, we are conducting several prospective and retrospective cohort studies that address a wide range of issues in general neurosurgery, neuroendoscopy, traumatic brain injury, patient reported outcome measures after neurosurgical procedures, and various projects in pediatric neurosurgery. We have a great amount of projects focused on patients from our center, but also many projects in collaboration with national and international centers.
