Essentials in Health Research Methodology

The course "Essentials in Health Research Methodology" aims to offer you an overview of the latest research methods used in Health Sciences. This program is designed to provide you with a comprehensive overview of the latest research methods used in Health Sciences, helping you gain a deeper understanding of research methodology as a whole. Throughout the course, you'll have the opportunity to learn from and interact with renowned Health Sciences experts from Basel. We're thrilled to be offering this course in partnership with the Department of Clinical Research (DKF) and Graduate School in Medical Health Science (GSMHS) at the University of Basel.

Upon successful completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental principles of health policy, health systems research and health economics.
  • Identify and critically assess various quantitative and qualitative research designs.
  • Apply key concepts in study planning, data collection, and statistical analysis.
  • Understand the core principles and structure of Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) in health research.
  • Distinguish between basic and advanced RCT designs, including parallel, crossover, and adaptive trials.

  • Module 1: Health Economics, Public Health and Public Health Policy, (January 7 & 8)
  • Module 2: Qualitative Research, Questionnaires and Surveys (January 13 & 15)
  • Module 3: Observational Studies and Analysis of Observational Datasets (January 20 & 22)
  • Module 4: Randomized Controlled Trials (January 27 and February 3)

All modules will be taking place from 13.00 - 17.00 h.

 

The course covers 4 modules:
1. Health Economics, Public Health and Public Health Policy
2. Qualitative Research, Questionnaires and Surveys
3. Observational Studies and Analysis of Observational Datasets
4. Randomized Controlled Trials

Each module will be covered by face-to-face teaching in combination with pre-reading and home assignments. The course introduces the different methods and will cover basics only. Each module consists of 2 sessions à 4h and can be booked separately. Please see the course schedule below for details on the individual modules.

 

Workload: 15h / each module or 60h / all modules. The crediting of ECTS requires

  • Prepare for each block by studying relevant material chosen by the lecturer. You will receive your pre-reading material in due time before each module.
  • Be present at all course blocks of your chosen topics.
  • Complete an assessment of your acquired knowledge at the end of the module. This may be a small quiz or a written assignment.

If all requirements have been met, you will receive a certificate for 15 hours of workload for each module you have successfully completed. If 2-3 modules are taken, 1 ECTS is awarded. If 4 modules are completed, 2 ECTS points are awarded.

To add this course to your academic record, please create a Learning Contract on MOnA, before the start day of the course and follow the instructions of your respective faculty.

This course is open for everyone who is interested in gaining an overview of the latest research methods used in Health Sciences. The course is specifically tailored for PhD students of the PhD subject Clinical Research enrolled at the University of Basel, Faculty of Medicine. Moreover, PhD students of the other PhD subjects of the Faculty of Medicine (Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Ethics, Medicines Development, Nursing Science, Public Health/ Epidemiology or Sport Science) are eligible to register for the course.

No prior knowledge of the specific topic is required.

*)The Department of Clinical Research (DKF) offers training grants for members of DKF research groups which result in a reduced fee of CHF 375 / module. Please note, that training grants can only be offered to DKF clinical research group members, who are working at the group leaders’ local study center.

Limited free places available for PhD Students of all PhD subjects of the Medical Faculty of the University of Basel. 

Cancellation of your registration is possible until 10 days before the course date. Cancellation thereafter or absence from the course will result in a cancelation fee of half the course fee.
