REDCap® Workshop: How to develop your own database

When conducting clinical research, it is essential to use a data capture system that is accepted by the ethical committees. REDCap® (Research Electronic Data Capture) is a secure and validated web application, made available by the Department of Clinical Research for researchers at the University Hospital of Basel and affiliated research institutions. It can be used for building and managing online surveys and databases.

The course offers an introduction to the use of that application for participants to develop their own databases. It also focuses on the most important methodological and regulatory aspects in managing clinical data in REDCap®. Through the course, participants will develop an understanding and first practical experience in using REDCap® based on hands-on exercises.

Main topics covered during this workshop are:

  • several live demos of REDCap®
  • creating data entry forms and a visit plan
  • creating different types of fields
  • how to show or hide fields (branching logic)
  • data entry, data export, user roles and rights.
  • More advanced exercises, which can be done as well during the workshop, include
    • setting up a randomisation process
    • creating an SAE alert email
    • how to create and send a survey via email from REDCap®

  • Understand the basic principles in developing a clinical research database
  • Develop their own simple clinical research database in REDCap®

Workload: 4-5 hours including pre-workshop video introduction

This course is open to anyone interested in using RedCap as a database tool for clinical research. It is especially appropriate for clinical researchers and study personnel who would like to set up their own study in REDCap®.
